CTLLS OVERVIEW
WHAT DOES CTLLS MEAN?
CTLLS stands for Certificate in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector
WHY SHOULD I DO CTLLS?
New government standards require that all those taking a post in FE or adult teaching have a maximum of one year to achieve Qualified Teaching and Learning Status (QTLS). This will then allow you to register with the Institute for Learning (Ifl) in an associate teacher role. All teachers must be registered with the Ifl.
WHAT IS AN ASSOCIATE TEACHING ROLE?
If you are in an associate teaching role this means that you are not carrying the full range of teaching responsibilities. For example you do not need to demonstrate or apply extensive knowledge of curriculum development, delivery or innovation strategies. You may work from pre-prepared packs of materials and learning support documents. You may also be working with small student groups or one to one.
Associate teachers may carry out the following types of activities:
Initial assessment
Preparation and planning
Delivery, assessment and evaluation
Training/instructing
Tutoring
Coaching
Planning and running inductions
Delivering underpinning knowledge

IS CTLLS REALLY THE QUALIFICATION I NEED?
CTLLS is for any of the following groups of people:
i.Those new to teaching, training & learning and with little experience of delivering teaching or formal training.
ii.Those with some experience but who have no qualifications relevant to teaching or formal delivery of training.
iii.Experienced staff who have some relevant qualifications (to be decided on a case by case basis)
iv. Those who have the PTLLS and would like to take a fuller teaching role
WHAT ARE MY OTHER OPTIONS?
PTLLS (Preparation for Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector) is a 30 hour course which gives you a ‘threshold’ licence to teach and a taster of what is involved. You are able to do the PTLLS either separately as an independent qualification prior to CTLLS, or to do it as part of the mandatory modules in CTLLS.
DTLLS (Diploma in teaching in the Lifelong Learning sector) covers all modules of PTLLS and CTLLS, gives you the equivalent of a Cert. Ed., and a subject specialism, if you are thinking of taking a fuller teaching role with all the responsibility that goes with this.
See the information leaflets about our other courses.
WHY IS THERE A LEVEL 3 & 4? WHICH DO I NEED?
Learning outcomes are the same for each level but you can complete assessments at either level depending on how you are able to study. Level 3 involves describing, explaining and some limited evaluation while level 4 is much more theoretical. You will need the ability to critically analyse, use referencing systems and engage in detailed reflection and analysis.
WHAT ARE THE ENTRY REQUIREMENTS?
All candidates are required to demonstrate level 3 skills in language and literacy, and level 2 numeracy and ICT. These skills will be tested at interview to ensure you have the appropriate levels to achieve success on the course.
All candidates are required to have access to a computer with internet and printing facilities.
WHAT DOES THE COURSE INVOLVE?
CTLLS has a face-to-face delivery time of 120 hours and is divided into 3 mandatory modules and one with optional choices. In addition to this you will be required to teach a minimum of 30 hours during this time, 3 of which will be observed and assessed by your course tutor. You will be assessed on all aspects of each unit via both written and practical assessment tasks. The module headings are as follows:
1.Preparing to teach in the lifelong learning sector
2.Planning and enabling learning
3.Principals and practice of assessment
4.Optional units
You can expect to spend at least 120 hours on self-study time outside the actual course hours.
